Have you ever used the online ticket booking service of Indian Railway through its online portal at IRCTC.com then I think you must have came across several irregularities while getting the online ticket in the peak season time i.e in summer or winter vacations. In the peak season most of the time IRCTC servers is supposed to be overloaded. And with the Tatkal ticket services it has to be a total mess….
But now it seems that the hassles about IRCTC would become a matter of past as it has just redesigned its website structure with a very helpful user interface… and every information like tickets availability in every train passing through the destination and departing station will be displayed at once that was earlier only possible using a grease monkey script in Mozilla Firefox.. Read more about greasemonkey script for IRCTC. Apart from the seats availability the fare information and class selection can also be declared from with in a single screen.
Do you know that there is also a great enhancement already applied … if you are a regular visitor or a subscribed visitor than you can guess what am i talking about.. yes the online booking of tickets right from the midnight to upto midnight i.e from 00.30 to 23.30 recall my earlier post Now Book online Railway Tickets before 8 am its 12.30 am…
Though the changes implemented looks very nice but still are in beta phase and will be fully functional at the Independence Day (15 August)… if you wanted more info then visit the IRCTC beta website testing… but in the mean time don’t forget to subscribe for the feedburner’s newsletter for daily news of new articles.

The beta is a definite improvement. Their use of accordion sections makes it up to date. But they still make it really difficult to find the trains in the first place ! Try finding the connecting trains between Indore and Rajkot for example. Its a real challenge ! In general finding trains, especially if connections are needed, between 2nd tier cities is really difficult.
It upset me enough to build my own website – at bharatbyrail.com you just enter the cities you are travelling between, state the date and time range and it gives you the best trains, allows ample time for connections and finds routes between nearby stations not just the one you explicitly specify. Armed with these train numbers and times, you can go to IRCTC and make the booking.
Ideally, IRCTC would do all this itself. I’m sure in due course they will. Until then, we have to improvise and I built my own techniques at bharatbyrail.com – its totally free to all comers and totally ad-free.
[…] UPDATE: From the 15 of August you will no longer need any Grasemonkey script to get train availability as IRCTC is working very hard to give you much easier interface and they have redesined its online booking system and everything you would like to know whether it is trains list with seats availability or fare from a particular distance or the class selection will be now avialable on a single page… read more at the link given here […]
